Prof. Richard Bell

Richard Bell is Emeritus Professor at Murdoch University having recently retired as Professor of Sustainable Land Management from 2007 to 2024.

 

He developed and led the Land Management group at Murdoch which is now part of the SoilsWest consortium that seeks to foster collaboration among WA soils researchers. Over 60 PhD and masters students have completed their studies under his supervision and he has mentored 14 Post-doctoral Fellows and 16 visiting international scientists. He has published over 400 peer reviewed articles on a diverse range of topics  from plant and crop nutrition, crop agronomy, soil fertility and management to farming systems. Richard was awarded the Prescott Medal by Soil Science Australia in 2022 for outstanding, sustained contributions to soil science.

Richard has worked in the dryland farming systems of WA but as well as rice-based farming systems and upland farming systems in South East Asia and South Asia. The international work, predominantly in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India and Vietnam, has been supported by ACIAR. Richard has expertise in management of sands, acid soils, and saline soils. With GRDC investment, Richard and colleagues have been expanding knowledge of the role of potassium in WA grain cropping soils. He is a leading researcher in the Soil CRC. Currently he’s the research lead for a Future Drought Fund project under the Long Term Trials programme. This involves 7 long term experiments in WA, Victoria and NSW exploring a range of soil management and cropping pattern approaches to increasing drought resilience.
